How to Measure Your Compound Bow Draw Length

There are three standard methods of determining draw length. If you are new to the sport make sure you have a friend or store associate help you get a base draw length for your body. Note that it is not an exact science. Because it determines the power of your shot you should always test out a few different lengths to find one you are comfortable with. Changing the length on your bow can usually be done by a bow seller. Keep in mind that a bows draw can not be altered too dramatically. If you are struggling too much to draw your bow you definitely need to get an adjustment.

The quickest way to determine your draw length is by taking your height and and dividing it by 2.5. This should give you a good estimate on what you will be able to draw with out struggling. This method works on the basic principal that your arm span length equals your body height. Because every person is different it is recommended that you try a more accurate method.

The second method of determining your draw length is a bit more accurate. Measure your arm span from the tips of your fingers. Then divided this number by 2.5. Should you have longer arms then your height would indicate this will give you a more accurate representation of the draw length your body can handle.

The last way to measure your it is to extend your fist as far as you can as if you were holding a bow. Measure from your fist to the middle of your mouth. A person shooting in proper form will draw the bow string to about the middle of their mouth. This insures that the peep sight is being used as a correct distance and insure an accurate shot.

Try to avoid changing your draw length around a lot. Once you establish a good contact point between you and your bow string you will be able to adjust your shot accordingly. Changing it will throw your contact points off and your shot will not be as accurate until you develop new contact points.
